St Andrews Church
8 AM St Andrews Church

Our first destination is St Andrew’s Church which is also known as the Kirk. Completed in 1818 it is the only Scottish church in Kolkata. Designed by M/s Burn, Currie & Co. its steeple was higher than that of the then Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta St. John’s Church. Bishop Middleton was much annoyed with this. Our guide will elaborate more on the controversy regarding the spire which ruffled many feathers!

This 8-acre necropolis has 1900 graves belonging to prominent British citizens and high officials of the East India Company. One of the better-maintained tombs is that of Sir William Jones, who first came to India in 1783 as a Supreme Court Judge, later founded the Asiatic Society and translated important Sanskrit scriptures such as the Bhagwad Gita into English.
